Pre-Code.Com Site News for August 2017

Welcome to August, folks. It’s time for TCM’s annual Summer Under the Stars, with 30 days dedicated to 30 different stars. You can check out the SUTS site here, though I’ll be honest with you guys: not the best month for pre-Code films. There are some rarities popping up: Franchot Tone and Ann Harding both have days dedicated to them. The days for Cagney, Rogers and Stanwyck are also showcasing a number of pre-Codes. There’s a good variety, though no stand-out days overall, sadly.

Uh, yeah. That’s about all I got. Watch some movies. Enjoy life.

Patreon Bonuses for August

Yeah, I know I’m behind on Thin Man readings. But there will be more of those! Also, this month I will be recording a video of my book and memorabilia collection. Well, I think it’ll be interesting any way– you might too!

If you subscribe to TCM via cable, you can watch TCM online via the TCM Watch site. If you don’t have cable, check out Sling TV, where (Americans) can watch TCM online or on their Roku for only $25/month. Plus you get HGTV and Food Network. That’s how I got my wife to okay it.

Truth be told, I’m not too impressed with this year’s SUTS line-up. Too many stars from the 50s and 60s for my liking. I am, however, looking forward to Franchot Tone, Robert Mitchum, Gene Kelly, and Ann Harding. Oh, and doesn’t Marion Davies have a day in late-August dedicated to her? Or am I just imagining it …

Sharing family trivia: My adult special needs sons is crazy about The Girl from Missouri and has been since he was about 4 years old. Once you fall for Harlow, I guess it’s forever. Nonetheless, I can’t convince him that all the classic movies he used to watch on Canada’s Family Channel are now on TCM. Stubborn cuss.

You can always count on Stanwyck though. Some good choices for her. She’s more suitable for Star of the Month than a day but I’ll take her any way I can get her! So Big is a lovely tearjerker. She’s got so many good pre-Codes. I wonder sometimes how they’re able to pick from a whole body of work and narrow it down to just 24 hrs. Looking forward to Franchot Tone as well.
