Ah, June! What is June’s deal? At least it’s not as useless as a month as March is, but it’s close.
I say that partially inspired by the paltry number of pre-Codes present on Turner Classic Movies this month. While there a few obscurities– a Frank Fay movie that I haven’t seen yet? Oh yay– there are a number of excellent movies you should check out if you haven’t yet, including less-well-known corkers like Picture Snatcher, Faithless, and Madame Du Barry. (I was honestly a little too excited when I saw the network was showing the hard-to-find Du Barry again, that movie is bonkers.)
Over on the Criterion Channel, this month they will have a few rare Carole Lombard pre-Codes streaming, the masterful Virtue and No More Orchids, plus a nice edition of Madchen in Uniform. On the physical media side, the label just released a copy of Merrily We Go to Hell on DVD and blu-ray, another personal favorite that I’m hoping to pick up soon.
As mentioned last month, I’ve been revising some old reviews. I’ve completely updated and rewritten my decade-old reviews for The Emperor Jones and Midnight Mary, as well as added a ton of new images and info for Heroes for Sale. So please check those out!
I am still planning a household move near the end of July, so postings maybe become infrequent. But then then I’m also going through and getting rid of stuff. I have a plan to raffle off some of my old DVDs and blu-rays to my Patrons over at Patreon in July; I’ll post more details about that early next month.
Have a safe and fun summer!
