Hello again everybody! I apologize for the missing months there– my move from Germany to Colorado has been tumultuous, from having to re-purchase every appliance in my house to helping my kids weather this transition. (I have spent the last 30 minutes writing this with my son demanding I make him lunch– it is 10 in the morning.) There were also some issues with the site that required some tinkering and changes; I still have some work to do, but hopefully we’ll get this place up and better than ever soon.

One other note– being back in the States does mean that I do get to make the occasional appearance to promote my book. This Monday, August 3rd, both Kim and I will be signing pre-Code Essentials at the Roxie in San Francisco both before and after a showing of Design for Living, as well as introducing the movie. Reserve tickets if you can! More info here.

TCM is doing its annual Summer Under the Stars for August — my favorite time of year! — but there are only a handful of pre-Codes playing on the network. You have some entries for Bette Davis, Katharine Hepburn, Joel McCrea, the Marx Brothers and Joan Bennett. The paucity of pre-Codes at least means this is a rare month around here– I’ve reviewed every film being shown! Check it out below.

Joan Bennett holds John Barrymore in Moby Dick.

Pre-Code Movies on TCM in August 2026

All times are EST. Schedule subject to change. Movies marked with an asterisk (*) are covered in my book Pre-Code Essentials, out now from TCM and Running Press. Full schedule available here.

Hope you find a fun watch this weekend! Hopefully I’ll be back soon with an actual review of Letty Lynton, should the Fates prevail!
