Getting her start in the pictures as a stand-in for Lillian Gish, Una Merkel’s deft comic skill was soon discovered. She became the requisite smart talking best friend in a wide variety of Pre-Code comedies.
Her gift never left her, and later roles included Destry Rides Again with Marlene Dietrich and even a role in the Lana Turner remake of The Merry Widow. She transitioned into television before retiring in 1965, and passed away in 1986.
